Derek’s love for stories began at age eight, when his father gifted him a dusty box of crumbling sci fi novels. However, despite his voracious interest in literature and film, Derek lived many lives before centralizing storytelling as his occupation. In the interim, he completed a B.S. in Computer Science and a B.A. in Justice; worked for the US Secret Service; developed software to teach English as a second language through a web-based phonetic speech recognition system; spent time as a professional sailor in the Baltic, Atlantic, and Mediterranean; sweated on an asphalt road construction crew in the Colorado Rockies; and became an avid skydiver. It was while hitchhiking and walking 14,000 miles from Munich to Cape Town that he first adopted the camera as an expressive device. Since his travels, he has used visual media to reflect on unconsciously held perspectives and assumptions and to help other artists tell their stories.

Derek has shot feature films, documentaries, music videos, dance films, and commercials. He believes physicality is it's own form of communication and is guided by the belief that successful cinematography should frame the viewer’s experience without distraction or ego.
